It was named after William Kintzley, who developed it at Iowa State University in the 1880s. It starts the season with the similar dusty green leaves of other honeysuckle cultivars. However, come summer, it produces showy, saucer-like bracts resembling eucalyptus and euphorbia, from which a cluster of bicolor white and yellow flowers emerge at the center. In summer, the bracts eventually turn to a silvery color that rivals eucalyptus leaves. Non-invasive, the vine will climb up to 12 feet high, depending on the height of the support structure, such as a fence, trellis, rail, obelisk, or post. With no support structure, it forms a scrambling mound with spreading vines that will cascade over walls and boulders. Kintzley's Ghost provides a showstopping display of unusual foliage with texture and color that will surely draw attention, and the flowers are irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators. You might also be happy to know that it tolerates hot and dry conditions, and the deer turn their nose up to it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Kintzley's Ghost Honeysuckle is a must for hummingbird gardens! Growing up to 12 feet tall depending on the height of the support structure, it is ideal for growing on fences, trellises, mailboxes, poles, arches, arbors, pergolas, or any other structure that will provide something for the vines to twine around. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 or 2 feet. Although you will be removing good stems and buds, this treatment keeps these vigorous growers in bounds. If not pruned, these vines will quickly become a mass of old, diseased woody stems producing very few flowers. Always leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current season's vines and blooms.

Helpful Articles

Click on the link below for helpful advice from our experts on how to plant and care for Clematis vines.

How To Plant A Clematis

How To Prune A Clematis

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!
