Its attractive, glossy, evergreen, deep green leaves are edged in gold on dense shrubs reaching about 3 to 4 feet in height with an equal spread over time. The highly fragrant blooms of Variegated Winter Daphne are crystalline white inside and purplish-pink outside. Winter Daphne usually begins blooming sometime in January or February (depending on climate) and continues through March or April. The flowers are good for cutting and last well in a flower arrangement. Winter Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural evergreen hedge in shady landscape borders and woodland gardens. They are excellent for use under the canopies of large shade trees or planted near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed.

PLEASE NOTE: Daphne are one of the easiest plants to take care of once established, however, to achieve successful establishment it is very important to plant them right. Fill the hole with water and let it drain. Then, after it drains, fill it with water again, but this time clock how long it takes to drain. In well-drained soil the water level will go down at a rate of about 1 inch an hour, which is fine for Daphne. A faster rate, such as in loose, sandy soil, may signal potentially dry site conditions, which is fine for Daphne. A slower rate indicates poor draining soil and is a caution you need to improve drainage, plant in a raised mound or bed, or look for plants that are more tolerant of wet or boggy conditions.

Soil pH

Winter Daphne grow best in a slightly acid to neutral soil ranging from 6.0 to 7.0 on the pH scale. Constantly soggy or wet soil is a killer. Around 2007 scientists did research on Sudden Daphne Death Syndrome (SDDS) and found that Daphne as a species is highly prone to root rot infections. Since root rot is caused by soil borne fungi that are ubiquitous, meaning found everywhere in the natural environment, and these fungi become active on plant roots in wet soils, a well-drained soil and proper watering is vital for establishment and long term health of the plant. Young, recently planted Daphne plants prefer a damp to lightly moist soil. Know that it must have a well-drained soil and shade or part shade. No direct afternoon sun. Winter Daphne thrives in deep shade under the canopies of large shade trees and in other areas where not many other evergreen shrubs will grow. That said, plants will tolerate the morning sun. These plants are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. We rarely water the plants growing in our gardens. That said, it's not the easiest plant to grow in containers, much preferring growing in the ground. Daphne prefers shade to part shade. Morning sun is okay but avoid direct afternoon sun. Grows best in rich, sandy-humusy, well-drained but moist soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5 pH). Good soil drainage is essential as Daphne do not like constantly soggy soils, which can cause root rot. In heavy clay soil that doesn't drain well it's a good idea to plant in raised mound to ensure proper drainage. Daphne are drought tolerant when established however this spring, summer and fall bloomer prefers a consistently moist soil during the bloom season. Dry soil may reduce summer bloom. Make sure to pick the right spot for planting because once established Daphne do not like their roots to be disturbed. Daphnes are often slow to establish and are best left undisturbed once planted.

Note: For helpful advice provided by our experts, click on the Planting & Care tab above on desktops or below on mobile phones.

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/Daphne-Lawrence-Crocker-Topiary-Standard-1.jpg?v=1779918757
