In mid-spring, the flowers form in clusters of 3 at the ends of almost every stem on the plant, standing out nicely against the gray-green evergreen foliage. At 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Crater Lake is a good fit as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or groupings or as a natural hedge where space allows. Perfect for partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or home foundation plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

An upright grower 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Crater Lake Rhododendron is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller spaces or in groupings or as a colorful natural hedge in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. A fine evergreen accent or grouping in home foundations and around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. As with other evergreen rhododendrons, it does especially well on fertile embankments, hillsides, and slopes. Can be grown in large pots. Though it will tolerate full sun in cool-summer climates, we always suggest some filtered sun or shade during the hottest midafternoon hours in hot-summer climates. A fine addition to blue or purple theme gardens, rhododendron and azalea gardens, Asian or Zen gardens, and woodland gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

A little good advice goes a long way to successfully grow Rhododendrons. Rhododendrons are easy to grow and care for when planted correctly and in the right spot.

Rhododendrons thrive in a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part shade, preferably morning sun with afternoon shade or heavily filtered sun. All-day dappled shade is fine as well. Keep in mind that whether growing in the ground or in containers, constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for Rhododendrons, and most other plants for that matter. Some soils, such as heavy clay, quick-draining sand, or otherwise poor soils, might need to be amended to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or moisture retention. In containers, select a pot with a drainage hole(s) and use a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil. Avoid using any native soil in pots. Leaves mature to a handsome dark emerald green. Now to the sweet part. In spring, abundant, delicate clusters of sweetly fragrant, small white flowers are beautiful and attract butterflies. This is a shrub frequently used by birds for nesting to raise their young. Exceptionally heat tolerant and disease and pest resistant, Coppertop is right at home in southern landscapes.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 6 wide, depending on pruning, the Coppertop Sweet Viburnum is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. But that all changed for us when we were at a nursery convention and laid eyes on 'Unraveled', a unique Boxwood that has an intriguing arching form with weeping branches. Naturally growing in an arching mound 3 to 4 feet high and 5 to 6 feet wide, the branches will cascade beautifully over a wall or down an embankment. When trained to grow more upright it has an even more dramatic weeping habit perfect for accentuating an entryway or in a pot. Exceptionally cold hardy to -20F, the shiny dark green foliage remains year round with little to no bronzing. As with so many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. with its intoxicating perfume - the promise of spring. Its attractive, glossy, evergreen, deep green leaves are edged in gold on a canopy that might reach 3 to feet wide over time. The highly fragrant blooms of Variegated Winter Daphne are crystalline white inside and purplish pink outside. Winter Daphne usually begins blooming sometime in January or February (depending on climate) and continues through March or April. The flowers are good for cutting and last well in a flower arrangement. Winter Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen in shady landscape borders and woodland gardens. They are excellent for use under the canopies of large shade trees or planted near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed.

PLEASE NOTE: Daphne are one of the easiest plants to take care of once established, however, to achieve successful establishment it is very important to plant them right. Fill the hole with water and let it drain. Then, after it drains, fill it with water again, but this time clock how long it takes to drain. In well-drained soil the water level will go down at a rate of about 1 inch an hour, which is fine for Daphne. A faster rate, such as in loose, sandy soil, may signal potentially dry site conditions, which is fine for Daphne. Responding very well to pruning or shearing for various formal shapes or hedges, this textural and colorful beauty is a fine alternative to boxwood or Japanese holly for partially shaded areas. We suggest 3 to 4 hours of sunlight per day, preferably in the morning and/or evening hours. If left unpruned, the cascading branches form a soft-textured mound 3 to 4 feet tall and wide which lights up the garden. Excellent for a stunning natural or formal hedge in the garden or as a solo in containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, Thunderbolt Box Honeysuckle is ideal for use as an accent in partially shaded smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a natural or formal hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It responds very well to shearing for creating tight formal hedges in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. In design, we often use two to frame an entrance. It can also be grown in containers and clipped to form perfect spheres and cubes. If you prefer low-maintenance and no trimming, Winter Gem will reach about 5 feet tall and wide and is excellent for spaced groupings or a more natural hedge where its fine texture is a nice contrast for larger-leaved plants.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With a mature height of 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, depending on pruning, the Winter Gem Boxwood is ideal for groupings or as a natural or formal clipped hedge in sunny or partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance and will only need supplemental water during prolonged periods of drought. In our gardens here in north-central Georgia it produces pretty candle-like clusters of fragrant, bright yellow flowers at the tops of branches. The flowers are followed by attractive grape-like clusters of bluish-purple berries that add extra appeal in the landscape and are relished by birds. But the flowers and berries aren't the only great attributes. Frond-like, evergreen leaves develop in whorls along horizontally layered branches on vertical stems provide unique texture and form in the landscape that contrasts nicely with any other types of plants nearby.

Marvel Mahonia is one of a few evergreen shrubs that not only grows well but thrives under the canopies of large shade trees. It is also useful as a natural hedge or as an accent, in groupings or to frame an entryway in shady home foundation plantings. Hosta Lilies, perennial ferns and other shade-loving plants make great companions.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Marvel Mahonia is ideal for use as an accent in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. The frond-like, evergreen leaves develop in whorls along horizontally layered branches on vertical stems provide unique texture and form in the landscape that contrasts nicely with any other types of plants nearby.
