In mid-summer, each leaf axil is surrounded by loads of small, soft pink to blue flowers followed by clumps of powerfully bright purple berries that are shaped like small pearls. The leaves turn yellow in the fall and the berries persist through winter or until the birds get them all.

The USDA says beautyberry has insecticidal properties that repel mosquitoes, ants, ticks and other pesky critters. Our favorite of all the tall hollies, Liberty sports highly attractive, lustrous deep green leaves with 15 to 20 pairs of points per leaf. In late fall through winter the branches abundant bright scarlet berries add to the overall appeal and provide winter interest in the landscape. The Liberty Holly can be grown as a large shrub, with foliage from the ground up, or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive, small evergreen tree.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 15 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Liberty Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in single or staggered rows to form a solid privacy hedge or screen, or to frame the corners of homes or other buildings. Due to the presence of carotenoids in the flowers, some say that the Orange Tea Olive has a more pleasant fragrance than the white. We've smelled them both. It might be all in our head, but we think the orange does smell a little sweeter, like candy. There are other subtle differences as well. We've only had this one for a year in our gardens but it seems to be just as cold hardy as the green-leaved species, Osmanthus fragans (Fragrant White tea Olive). For now, we're listing it as cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b while awaiting feedback from those testing it outdoors in Zone 7a. You'll be happy to know that Yinbi Shuanghui begins blooming at a very young age, and just as heavy as it green-leaved cosuins. We've seen and smelled flowers on less than 1-year old plants we're growing in small, quart size pots.

New leaves emerge a white variegated with pink and green and the flowers have the same wonderful aroma as other Osmanthus fragans cultivars. The shrub can be kept smaller with occasional pruning. As a shrub, its dense foliage makes it ideal for use as a natural or clipped evergreen hedge, privacy screen, or background, or to frame corners or fill voids between widely-spaced windows in home foundation plantings. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree for use as a focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. We suggest at least 3 hours of direct sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. Since growing it in our gardens, we've seen no insect or disease problems and deer don't touch it. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. To be fair, the word "Beni" in a plant variety name can mean red, orange or pink in Japanese. We also noticed that the individual flowers are larger than the species and equally as fragrant, and the leaves are larger as well. Due to the presence of carotenoids in the flowers, some say that the orange flowering tea olives have a more pleasant fragrance than the white. We've smelled them both. It might be all in our head, but we think the orange does smell a little sweeter, like candy. You can grow this one as a large shrub or small tree that reportedly will reach a height of 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. As a shrub, its dense foliage makes it ideal for use as an evergreen hedge, privacy screen, or background, or to frame corners or fill voids between widely-spaced windows in home foundation plantings. As this tea olive grows taller, which it does rather quickly, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree that is ideal for use as a focal point specimen tree in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. The Oakland Holly is perfect for framing the corners of homes and other structures or in privacy screen plantings. It is self fruiting holly that does not need a pollinator to produce its abundant, bright red berries.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Oakland Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in single or staggered rows to form a solid privacy screen. The flowers open white and fade to a pinkish-brown in fall. But what distinguishes this hydrangea from other species is its very large, oak leaf-shaped leaves that provide a tropical look in the garden. In fall, the deep green leaves turn handsome shades of purple, orange-bronze and red. Shedding bark provides winter interest in the garden as well. A very low-maintenance plant that deserves a spot in every American garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 5a to 9b

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound 6 to 9 feet tall and 6 to 9 feet wide, the Oakleaf Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a warm season privacy hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. A nice accent or corner plant in home foundation plantings or against a large, windowless wall. Right at home in the partially shaded woodland border and a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cottage gardens and cut flower gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for hedge; 12 feet or more apart space between plants

How To Measure Total Square Feet Of A Planting Area

How Many Plants Needed To Cover A Planting Area?

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where the Oakleaf Hydrangea is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and place back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

The Oakleaf Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility, preferring a soil rich in organic matter. Sun exposure will depend on your location. Plants will grow in full sun to part shade in northern zones 5 and 6, and shade to part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in zones 7 and further south. For best flowering, we suggest 6 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic.
