The exposed surfaces of the leaves are golden yellow, while the shaded foliage is dark green. The variegated effect is enchanting. One of the faster growing fernspray cypresses, it can put on up to 12 inches of growth per year, reaching 10 feet in height and half as wide in 10 years., after which it grows much more slowly. It has an upright habit with open branching ending in straggly stems bearing distinctive, flat, fern-like sprays of deep green foliage. Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and half as wide in 10 years with no pruning, and ultimately to 20 feet tall and half as wide at the base, the Fernspray Hinoki is a highly attractive addition to any garden, especially Asian theme gardens. With an annual pruning in late winter, it can be kept to half its size and a fuller form if desired. That said, we like it's natural look. It has an upright habit with open branching ending in straggly stems bearing distinctive, flat, fern-like sprays of deep green foliage. Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and half as wide in 10 years with no pruning, and ultimately to 20 feet tall and half as wide at the base, the Fernspray Hinoki is a highly attractive addition to any garden, especially Asian theme gardens. With an annual pruning in late winter, it can be kept to half its size and a fuller form if desired. That said, we like it's natural look.
