Then we looked at a photo of the foliage and knew why. The leaves of this hybrid cross between \u003ci\u003eVitex trifolia\u003c\/i\u003e 'Purpurea' and \u003ci\u003eVitex agnus-castus\u003c\/i\u003e are grey-green on top, and when the leaf is \"flipped\" over by the breeze, the purple undersides flash - a captivating site! As summer arrives the upper sides of the leaves take on a greyish-mauve tint finally turning to an attractive pumpkin-orange in fall. A very cool flowering tree with unique coloration that draws attention in the landscape. But the colorful leaves aren't the only special attribute. We're not sure about Flip Side, but if it's like some other Vitex varieties, it might die back during winter and resprout from the roots in spring. Handsome, finely textured evergreen foliage is bright to medium green through the warm seasons turning attractive bronze shades through the winter months. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the flowers, and blooming branches serve very well for cutting to create stunning indoor floral arrangements. At maybe 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide when all grown up, Wakaebisu is a fine accent in small garden spaces or grouped or as a natural low hedge where space allows. This one is so dependable that we have no problem suggesting it for use in home foundation plantings. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming.
