A little later to bloom than other cultivars, the huge, dinner plate size white to very soft-pink flowers of Dark Mystery begin appearing mid summer and continue nonstop through early fall. Each flower has a dark cherry red eye from which dark pink veining extends through the petals. But where this variety gets its name is from its handsome deep wine-purple foliage, which serves as the perfect backdrop to showcase the flowers. Although the foliage is a little later to emerge in spring than some other types of plants, once it starts emerging the growth is rapid. The large, maple-like leaves are broadly smooth and form a full, billowy look on mounding plants that might reach 5.5 feet tall and equally as wide. A captivating specimen, grouping or hedge in the landscape. Especially nice around patios, pools and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 5.5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Dark Mystery Hardy Hibiscus makes a bold and beautiful specimen in the landscape or in large containers. In our gardens here in central Georgia it has out-performed every other yellow variety we've tried. Its yellow flowers are larger and more sweetly perfumed, and it continues to bloom much later in the season than other selections. The elongated flower clusters are unique in that the clusters occur in a pom pom like pattern along the length of the inflorescence. The foliage is an attractive silvery-green. It prefers full to mostly sun however we've found that in zones 8 and 9 it likes some afternoon shade or filtered sun. At least 6 hours of direct sun per day is suggested for best flowering. As with so many other plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause problems with the roots. Can be cut back to 12 to 18 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring. Can also be deadheaded and pruned throughout the season for shaping purposes.

Helpful Articles

Click on a link below to find helpful advice from our experts on how to plant, fertilize, prune and water Butterfly Bushes.

How To Plant & Care For Butterfly Bushes

Planning a Butterfly Garden

Butterfly Garden Design & Planting Tips

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/buddleia-weyeriana-honeycomb-yellow-butterfly-bush-101_b64905a7-8ee8-43a1-9179-e333fc62dbe3.jpg?v=1779918827
