It was the first of the species to be described back in 1807. It is a large growing rambling rose with many uses in design. Left to grow naturally it will form a very large mounding and rambling shrub up to 10 feet tall with a spread of 20 feet or more, which is great for sunny landscape or woodland borders or to completely cover an ugly fence. With support, it is a vigorous climber to 30 feet high that can be trained to climb poles or columns or to grow on the top of a fence, arbor or pergola. If you have an unsightly old shed or other building you'd rather not see, this rose will cover it completely. In spring comes the breathtaking display of miniature double flowers strongly scented like violets dripping from the green, thornless stems. Just know that you'll be doing a considerable amount of pruning. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day. Has very good drought tolerance and disease resistance. We think this rose is more beautiful when allowed space to grow naturally, with little if any pruning. That said, she responds well to pruning.
