The small tree is very densely clothed in small, charming, star-shaped five to seven-lobed leaves that emerge shades of pink and red in early spring quickly changing to yellow-green. By summer the foliage has transitioned to a darker rich green and then cooler fall temperatures bring vivid yellow, orange and red shades.
