It is an exclamation point in the sunny landscape or home foundation plantings and excellent for privacy screen plantings where space is limited, to line a driveway or property line or for using two frame an entrance. Adding 15 to 24 inches in height per year, its blue green to gray green evergreen foliage requires no trimming or pruning to keep its dense and narrow columnar form, which is much like the shape of the Washington Monument. Highly adaptable, Taylor Juniper tolerates poor conditions in full to partial sun. The only thing that it doesn't like is wet soil. It is highly drought tolerant when established and the deer don't touch it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 25 feet tall and only 3 to 4 feet wide, the Taylor Juniper is ideal for use as a privacy screen or hedge where space is limited. It features especially attractive soft-looking feathery fans of dark green foliage and is absolutely low-maintenance, requiring no pruning to keep its naturally dense form. As the name implies, Private Jet will quickly for a privacy screen where its larger cousins won't fit, and is also nice as a vertical accent in landscape borders or to frame the corners of homes. It simultaneously produces contrasting small red cones that add further to the spring appeal. The wands of thick evergreen needles mature to a rich gray-green throughout the rest of the year. A moderate grower adding 12 to 15 inches in height per year, it forms a somewhat open pyramid to around 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide at its base on average. A fine accent tree in small to medium-sized landscape spaces or to frame the corners of taller homes, structures, and entrances. It can also be grown in containers on patios and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a captivating beauty that always has you looking forward to spring for the glowing foliage color show.

Note: 'Mac's Gold' and 'McConnell's Gold' are the same plant, with the scientific name Picea glauca 'Mac's Gold'.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Mac's Golden White Spruce is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or spaced grouping in sunny landscape borders or as an accent or to frame the corners in home foundation plantings and other structures. Very nice in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces, however might eventually need transplanting to the landscape. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Moderate drought tolerance when established. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary except to prune a stray stem or branch spoiling the shape of the tree.

Note: Find helpful advice from our experts under the Planting & Its slightly ascending stems are clothed in stiff, dark green, four-sided, radially arranged needles that sometimes have a bluish-grey tinting. It features small but attractive purple cones that mature to a reddish-brown color, remaining on the tree for several years. Unlike most conifers, which prefer life on the dry side, black spruces will thrive in consistently moist to wet, well-drained soils. Easy to grow, no-maintenance, and extremely cold-hardy to USDA Zone 2, where winter low temperatures can be -50°F, the Columnar Black Spruce is an excellent statuesque specimen or grouping in landscape borders, vertical accent in home foundation plantings, or as a centerpiece in containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Columnar Black Spruce is ideal as a specimen or grouping in sunny landscape or woodland borders. It is also an excellent accent tree to frame the corners or entrances of tall homes and other buildings. Its slow growth rate and narrow form make it suitable as a centerpiece in containers. It is excellent for decorating as an outdoor Christmas tree. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, alpine gardens, rock gardens, and Asian theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 8'+ apart. Avoid overwatering, providing only enough water to maintain a damp to moist soil. The showy bright-yellow bark is present year-round, but it shines the most in winter when there are no leaves to hide it. It is a fast-growing North American native tree that typically reaches 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide, depending on how you grow it. It naturally grows as a large multi-stemmed shrub-like tree; however, it can be trained to be an attractive single-trunk tree form. Except for Alaska and Hawaii, it will grow in almost every state in the U.S., even North Dakota, where deciduous trees usually won't grow. Although it's a maple, it differs from most other species because it has odd-pinnate compound leaves, each with 3 to 5-toothed leaflets resembling ash trees. The leaves are a light to medium green through the warm season turning to shades of yellow in the fall. Samaras are green turning yellow, in long drooping clusters that appear in the fall. A fantastic statement tree, hedge, or screen that is sure to be a conversation piece.

The name Box Elder came from the use of its wood for making wooden boxes and crates. In our gardens, no amount of extreme weather has hindered the strong performance of this amazing maple tree. It grows best in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and in full sun to part shade. Established trees are moderately drought tolerant but will appreciate an occasional deep soaking during extended periods of summer drought. Does not require pruning however can be trimmed annually in late winter to maintain a smaller plant or for very interesting topiary forms.

Helpful Articles

Click on a link below to find helpful planting and care advice from our experts.

How To Prune Junipers & Other Conifers

Plant as you would a Cypress tree...

How To Plant a Cypress Tree

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/pinus-flexilis-cesarini-blue-limber-pine-6.jpg?v=1779910527
canaertii-juniper-red-cedar-3-gallon-pot
Canaertii Juniper (Red Cedar) - 3 Gallon Pot

'Canaertii' Juniper (Red Cedar)

Juniperus virginiana ‘Canaertii’

Plant Details

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 3a-9b Find Your Zone

Plant Type: Coniferous Evergreen Shrub

Height at Maturity: 25-30'

Width at Maturity: 10-15'

Spacing: 7' for privacy screens; 16'+ for space between plants

Growth Habit / Form: Upright, Pyramidal

Growth Rate: Fast! While it shares the typical proportions of other native red cedars, its shape becomes more interesting and distinct over time. When young, it has a fluffy appearance and conical form transforming with age to a more angular and open habit with branch tips extending like arms reaching for the sky. Abundant, showy, cobalt-blue berries stand out beautifully against the rich green foliage to provide even more appeal and a delicious treat for birds. Canaertii is extremely cold and heat hardy thriving in USDA Zones 3 to 9. It likes all the sun you can give it and is deer and insect resistant and drought tolerant when established. Fast growing to about 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, this eye-catching and easy-to-grow north American native evergreen provides unique and fine texture as a specimen, to frame corners of tall homes, or in privacy screen plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall by 10 to 15 feet wide feet wide, the Canaertii Juniper is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screen plantings in sunny landscape borders. Its upright pyramidal form is 15 to 20 feet tall and 7 to 9 feet wide at its base at maturity. It is clothed in bundles of long silver-blue needles with a distinctive curve that provides a soft, soothing appearance and feel in the landscape. Easy to grow, it is an outstanding specimen, grouping, or addition to privacy screen plantings in sunny landscapes and garden beds.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 20 feet tall 9 feet wide, the Morris Blue Korean Pine is an eye-catching beauty perfect for use as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screens in the sunny landscape. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. That's all changed with the introduction of Picea pungens 'Iseli Fastigiate,' commonly called Iseli Columnar Blue Spruce. A sentinel in the landscape with the form of a fat cigar, its average mature size in home gardens is 20 to 25 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, depending on location and elevation. It tends to grow shorter at higher elevations and taller at lower elevations. Extremely low-maintenance and easy to grow, the Iseli Columnar Blue Spruce is a beautiful accent for adding dynamic color, texture, and form where space might be limited in landscape borders, home foundation plantings, and rock and conifer gardens. Two can frame an entrance, or a spaced grouping of three is nice in larger spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Iseli Columnar Colorado Blue Spruce is ideal as an accent tree in smaller landscape or garden spaces where height is desired but space is limited. It is also excellent for framing entryways or corners in home foundation plantings or spaced groupings with trees 7 feet apart or more in larger landscape and garden spaces. It is also lovely in pots, planters, and other containers for situating on or around sunny patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, blue-theme gardens, Zen gardens, and the Xeriscape.

Suggested Spacing: 7 feet or more apart in spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Iseli Columnar Colorado Blue Spruce is easy to grow in damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant it in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. It grows best in full sun; however, in hot summer climates of Zones 7 and 8 in the south, it will prefer some filtered sun during the middle of the afternoon. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.

Note: For helpful advice from our experts, click the Planting & Care tab above on desktop monitors or below on mobile devices.

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/picea-pungens-iseli-fastigiate-colorado-blue-spruce-1.jpg?v=1779910591
golden-korean-fir-abies-koreana-aurea-3-gallon-pot
Golden Korean Fir (Abies Koreana 'Aurea') - The needle color transitions to a glowing light green during the summer. Abundant purple cones stand upright like 3" candles on the branches contrasting beautifully with the foliage. A slow grower that might add 6 inches or so in height per year, it has a more rounded shape when very young but develops a central leader forming a majestic pyramid 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide at the base when all grown up. Golden Korean Fir makes for a distinctive focal point specimen, corner plant in home foundation plantings, or an accent in mixed privacy screen plantings. In cool-summer climates of Zones 5-8 this one will tolerate full sun but prefers some filtered sun during the afternoon in hot summer climates.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Golden Korean Fir is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in spaced groupings where space allows in landscape borders. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. With an upright habit and pyramidal form, when all grown up the Golden Hinoki Cypress can reach a height of 20 feet or more and 10 to 15 feet wide at its base. Its gracefully spreading branches are clothed in cupped sprays of golden-yellow new foliage that contrasts beautifully with the mature, rich green interior foliage. Though the foliage is quite dense, attractive reddish brown bark with striking texture peeks through here and there for extra-added contrast and color. The Golden Hinoki is a fine, long-lived evergreen specimen or grouping in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also nice in spaced groupings with trees at least 15 feet or so apart and is a colorful addition to privacy screen plantings. Also very nice in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. The skillful pruner can create very interesting pom pom topiary forms with this selection. As with many other conifers and ornamental plants and trees, it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, which can cause root rot. It will grow in full sun to part shade. For best performance we suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day and a little filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in hot-summer climates. It has good drought tolerance when established but will appreciate an occasional deep soaking during prolonged periods of summer drought. No pruning required though a stray or damaged stem or branch can be removed any time of year. In fact, we think pruning or shearing destroys the natural beauty of the tree. That said, skilled pruners can create some very interesting topiary shapes and forms such as pom pom.

Helpful Articles

Click on a link below to find helpful advice from our experts on how to plant and care for Cypress.

How To Plant & It can be kept much smaller with pruning, which is often done for creating interesting pom pom topiaries and even bonsai, or just so it won't outgrow its setting. It features silvery blue-grey new leaves that mature to deep green with a glaucous backing when mature. Abundant young cones are a vibrant pink in spring maturing to brown seed cones over time that remain on the tree for up to 7 years. Its smooth grey bark becomes platy in older age. Whether pruned in an artistic manner or left to grow naturally, the outstanding texture and soothing color of the Japanese White Pine make it an eye-catching specimen tree in any sunny area, even in coastal areas due to its salt tolerance.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 25 to 40 feet tall and equally as wide, the Japanese White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in any sunny and well-draining location.
