The flowers are tiny but boy do they pack a fragrant punch! All it takes is one Tea Olive to fill your front or backyard with a heavenly scent of sweet perfume. The scent is really indescribable. No other fragrant plant we know of smells like the Tea Olive. It's just one of those things you have to experience for yourself. The flowers are produced in both spring and fall and during the winter whenever nighttime temperatures are between about 45 to 65 degrees. As a shrub, its dense foliage makes it ideal for use as an evergreen hedge, privacy screen, or background in landscape borders or to frame corners or fill voids between widely-spaced windows in home foundation plantings. As it grows taller, which it does rather quickly, lower branches can be removed to a desired height to form a highly attractive focal point specimen tree for use in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. There's no need to plant this one near windows as one plant can fill a front or back yard with sweet aroma. Excellent for growing as a houseplant indoors, in the greenhouse or sunroom, and on patios, porches, decks. Little Ruby is so much smaller the bonsai enthusiasts are working their art with it. At 4 to 6 feet tall and wide in the garden and maybe half that size in containers, this diminutive shrub produces loads of bite-sized, super-sweet, red-fleshed figs that are perfect fresh or dried as a nutritious snack for kids, and grown-up kids too. These figs have a closed eye when ripe, which helps to resist splitting and retains sweetness. In warmer zones, a first crop will come around late July and again in mid-September. They produce the best fruit in moderately to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. In soil with low fertility it'll be worth your time to mix in some organic compost to the native soil. They like the soil to hold a good supply of water, especially when the fruits are developing in summer, but not so much water that the soil stays constantly soggy or wet, which can be problematic. The best and most fruits will are produced when trees are growing in full sun. From fall through winter and into spring, when temperatures are ranging between 45 and 75 degrees F, abundant, snowball-shape fragrant flowers completely encircle almost every stem. The flowers are so fragrant it takes only one plant to fill a half-acre front or back yard with intoxicating, sweet perfume, hence the other common name for this plant: Sweet Olive.
