The short stems are clothed with short dark green needles with silvery undersides. Clusters of contrasting tiny white buds at the stem tips look like stars, hence the name. Alpine Star is a very slow grower that might reach 24 to 30 inches tall and wide over time, making it a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers. It requires no pruning and is more heat tolerant than other fir types. Though we have it listed as cold hardy to 5b some sources say it is hardy in Zone 4. So plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
