When left alone and not thinned, this is one of the best bamboo for a solid screen or hedge that tops out at 12 to 18 feet in height. The lush foliage starts just above the ground providing an excellent visual barrier. It tolerates shade and works very well for stabilizing creek banks and other areas prone to erosion. This species is wind and salt tolerant but is less resistant to dryness, and is quite cold tolerant to -0 F when mulched well. Arrow Bamboo doesn't spread nearly as much as other running species. It is very easy to control and makes a beautiful specimen plant in home foundation plantings, Asian themed gardens, woodland gardens, or landscape borders, and does equally as well in pots or other containers. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are \"shooting,\" the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy.
