The flowers emerge white starting in July then turning to pink. As the season progresses they turn to raspberry red and finally to a deep wine-red in fall. The sturdy stems holding the flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. Extremely cold hardy, northern gardeners in locations where temperatures drop to as low as -40F can enjoy this floriferous beauty. At 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide when all grown up, this small tree is a spectacular addition as a focal point specimen in sunny or partially shaded landscape borders or home foundation plantings. It takes the heat at our location here in north-central Georgia, but it also withstands even the coldest winter temperatures as far north as USDA Zone 3a where white low temperatures reach down to -40F. In zones 3 to 7a it can be grown in full sun but in 7b to 8b we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Five hours or more of direct sunlight per day is suggested.
