They are typically hardy in USDA Zones 6a-9b, which means they'll survive winter low temperatures down to -10F. At 12 to 18 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, depending on pruning, garden mums are excellent for growing in garden beds or containers, but do keep in mind that in containers they'll lose about 10 to 20 degrees of their cold hardiness. We snip the mums growing in our gardens back to about half their height around the 4th of July. This pruning delays flowering to later in the season and forms more dense plants that will have twice as many flowers as opposed to allowing them to grow naturally.
