The soft, yellow flowers are small and inconspicuous, but they are loved by butterflies and beneficial pollinators. They are followed by bright red berries that birds will enjoy. The thin branches are spiny, so this is a shrub you don't have to worry about pets or other critters messing with. However, you won't have to worry about touching this plant, as it is extremely low-maintenance and never requires trimming. Very easy to grow, it thrives in as much sun as you can provide, handles cold temperatures down to -30°F, and exhibits high drought tolerance once established. At only about 18 inches tall and 3 feet wide, it makes for a fine accent in small garden spaces, or groupings, or as a low hedge where space allows. Its low water needs make it perfect for rock gardens and the xeriscape.
