It is noted for its softer needles, better needle retention, and longer life span. With a moderate to fast growth rate of 12 to 24 inches per year, it forms a tall, stately tree with a narrow pyramidal from 30 to 50 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide at maturity, depending on climate. This makes it an excellent choice for a focal point specimen, grouping, or in privacy screen plantings. Its slightly ascending branches are clothed in rich, dark green glossy foliage, with contrasting bright green new growth in spring. It produces attractive, cylindrical, dark brownish-red cones. It prefers cooler climates in USDA Zones 4a-7b, and doesn't like hot summers below Zone 6b.
