Its rich green leaves undulate and develop a slightly wavy appearance. Borneo King is the result of a series of hybridizations between two species of elephant ear. It gets its giant size from Alocasia 'Borneo Giant' and vigor and cold hardiness (to USDA Zone 8b) from Alocasia odora. It can grow to 10 feet high and 7 feet wide under ideal growing conditions in hot climates, but typically reaches 6 feet high and 5 feet wide in cooler climates. Gardeners north of Zone 8b can grow it in containers that can be brought indoors during winter when temperatures drop below 50°F. It is easy to grow, preferring a moist but not wet soil rich in organic matter, and shelter from high wind and direct afternoon sunlight to reach its full size.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, the Borneo King Elephant Ear thrives in garden beds or containers, which can be situated on sunny to partially shaded patios, decks, and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Very nice around pools and other bodies of water. When growing in a container, we recommend using a pot with a diameter of at least 16 inches. It can even be grown as a houseplant if you have the space to accommodate its size. In the garden, we suggest using it as a specimen. Where space allows, groupings are fine. A fine addition to tropical or tropical-look gardens, perennial gardens, and around water gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 10+ feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Borneo King Elephant Ear is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and part sun. We recommend filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. That said, we hear it can tolerate full sun, provided there is ample and consistent moisture. Borneo King Elephant Ear can be grown outdoors in the ground year-round in USDA Zones 8b-11. North of Zone 8b, it is best grown in a container that can be overwintered in an indoor space where temperatures will remain above freezing. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water when the top 2 inches of the soil have become dry, or if you notice the foliage beginning to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/Alocasia-macrorhiza-borneo-king-elephant-ear-plant-13.jpg?v=1779970720
