Its slightly ascending stems are clothed in stiff, dark green, four-sided, radially arranged needles that sometimes have a bluish-grey tinting. It features small but attractive purple cones that mature to a reddish-brown color, remaining on the tree for several years. Unlike most conifers, which prefer life on the dry side, black spruces will thrive in consistently moist to wet, well-drained soils.
