It forms a clump to 6 feet high and 3 feet wide, clothed in blue-green leaves in spring, transitioning to green with red accents in summer, and finally to vibrant red and deep scarlet shades in fall. In midsummer, tall stems bearing yellow-green flowers appear just above the foliage, turning to burgundy and coppery-bronze shades in fall. Cut stems in winter are excellent for use in dried flower arrangements. A tough, self-sufficient grass that thrives in full sun and moist or dry soil when established, it is also salt tolerant, and the deer don't touch it!
