In late winter to early spring it features large, gorgeous, double, dark red flowers with crepe-like, exquisitely ruffled and feminine petals. The petals surround a ringed crown of contrasting bright golden-yellow tipped stamens, further adding to the appeal. A site to behold in the garden and in cut flower arrangements and bouquets, or just float one in a bowl. Handsome dark green foliage on an an upright oval habit 10 to 15 feet tall make Don Mac a fine specimen as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a magnificent, small evergreen tree.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide depending on pruning, the Don Mac Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders, or is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and in woodland gardens and borders.

Spacing: 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or waterlogged soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with shade or filtered sunlight in the afternoon is perfect.
