Fuller than other Cotinus, Dusky Maiden is a hybrid cross of \u003ci\u003eCotinus szechuanensis\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eCotinus coggryia\u003c\/i\u003e 'Velvet Cloak'. It gets its name from the dusky colored foliage and cloud-like flowers resembling puffs of smoke. But the color show isn't only about the unique flowers. What's most attractive throughout the season are the almost circular and eucalyptus-like dark blue-green leaves heavily flushed with deep burgundy in spring that turn to dusky purple-green in summer before turning to shades of yellow, orange and red with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Very tolerant of poor and dry soils when established so is a fine selection for the Xeriscape (low water needs).
