This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 or 2 feet. Although you will be removing good stems and buds, this treatment keeps these vigorous growers in bounds. If not pruned, these vines will quickly become a mass of old diseased woody stems producing very few flowers. Always make sure to leave two good buds below where you make your cut. I found it here and was delighted to find it in gal pots, meaning it would not be a tiny foot tall baby plant but a full grown adult - or at least a teenager! The only thing I did not care for was how FedEx (or was it UPS??) treated it - the long box was almost completely flattened in the middle. but due to the masterful packing by Wilson Bros, there was NO damage to the two plants. These are larger with more growth on them than the clematis I have bought locally. I bought these to grow on 7 ft wooden obelisk combined with Tess of the d'Urbervilles climbing roses. For future purchases I will not hesitate to buy from Wilson Bros again. Initially I had cringed just a little at the price but oh my God they were sooooo worth every penny - tremendous healthy growth in perfect condition. I can't wait to see how they do this summer.
