It is a lovely and vigorous shrub forming a rounded mound of lush, deeply-divided, fern-like leaves similar in appearance to a laceleaf Japanese Maple. In late spring to early summer, abundant, large, flat-topped clusters of white flowers appear above the foliage, followed by abundant dark red to black berries. The flowers attract numerous beneficial pollinators, and the birds love the berries. Many folks grow the plant for its edible berries, which are well known for being high in nutrients and antioxidants. The berries are inedible fresh or raw but excellent for making juice, jams, jellies, and Elderberry wine. While a vigorous grower to 8 feet tall and wide, it responds well to pruning for size control or shaping purposes.
