The gracefully arching bright green leaves to 10 inches long and 3\/8 of an inch wide form dense, spreading, cascading mounds to 18 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the foliage often becomes blushed with shades of pink and red. Excellent as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border along shady paths and around patios or for cascading over walls and draping over rocks. In its native habitat in Japan it thrives in moist mountain and woodland areas, including areas around Mt. Hakone from which both its genus name and common name come from. In your landscape give it part shade to full shade and a consistently damp to moist soil. Avoid direct afternoon sun.
