It is a robust yet smaller grower forming an upright, narrow, fountain-like clump to only 4 feet tall and 2.5 to 3 feet wide at maturity. The foliage is blue-green during spring, turning to rich red shades in summer, becoming a deep purple-burgundy in fall and wheat color through winter. The grassy clump is topped in summer with airy clusters of pretty pinkish-wheat color flowers. The flower panicles persist for months and are excellent for cutting and use in cut flower arrangements. A significant asset to wildlife, quail and songbirds gobble up the tiny seeds and use the sturdy foliage clumps as a cold-weather shelter.
