Young very dark purplish culms turn green during the first year. As with many other \u003ci\u003ePhylllostachys\u003c\/i\u003e species, they turn a shade of yellow to golden orange when exposed to sunlight. The dense foliage grows from just above ground level to the top unless you want to remove lower branches to a desired height to exposed the culms. With a fast growth rate and left to grow naturally, you can expect Humilis to reach 8 to 14 feet in USDA Zone 6 and up to 20 feet tall in Zone 7 and further south. A great low-maintenance bamboo that provides a lushness to the landscape.
