Perhaps the most outstanding feature are the bright red stems during winter that stand out especially nice against a light background or snowy backdrop. During spring and summer the 5 to 6 feet tall and wide shrub is clothed in highly attractive variegated green leaves bordered in white. In late spring, flat-topped clusters of tiny yellow-white flowers are borne at the tips of stems. Clusters of pretty blue-white berries the birds will enjoy follow the flowers. With the arrival of cold temperatures in fall the leaves turn attractive red and purple shades.
