Lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. Being an early flowering female, she will require an early flowering male pollinator nearby to produce berries, such as 'Jim Dandy'. One male winterberry will be sufficient for pollinating 6 to 10 female shrubs. Lustrous dark green leaves up to 3 inches long turn colorful yellow to bronze shades in fall. Very easy to grow and adaptable, as with all other winterberry hollies, Maryland Beauty will thrive in full sun to part shade, light or heavy soils, and prefers life on the moist side, even tolerating wet soil in swampy areas where not much else will grow. An outstanding specimen, grouping or hedge that provides eye-popping color in the winter landscape, and the berries are a great food source for birds!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide, when pollinated by an early flowering male such as 'Jim Dandy', the Maryland Beauty Winterberry Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and native areas with moist but well drained or even wet soils.
