It is a fast grower forming a dense stately pyramid to 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide, which makes it ideal for use as a specimen or for privacy screens and hedges, where its presence will not go unnoticed. Its bold, magnolia-like deep green leaves combine magnificently with cypress and other conifers, and other evergreen shrubs and trees. Also perfect for framing corners of homes and entryways. The dark foliage is an excellent backdrop to the large and abundant clusters of sweetly fragrant creamy white spring flowers which are followed by clusters of bright red berries in summer that persist in the fall. It is quite drought tolerant when established and heat and humidity don't phase it. As with so many other ornamental plants it does not like constantly wet or waterlogged soil wet conditions. We've seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven't touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping and size control.
