It gets its common name from the dense mound of silvery light gray foliage, which becomes nearly covered from early to mid summer with abundant clusters of pinkish purple flowers. The tiny, wooly leaves are fragrant and have a sharp spicy taste. It is native to Bulgaria, Greece, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey where it is found on mountain steps and rocky slopes up to 10,000 feet. Needless to say, it can handle tough conditions in sandy to rocky soil and deer, rabbits and insect pests leave it alone, but the butterflies and beneficial pollinators love it. The plant grows about 6 to 8 inches high and a foot or so wide making it a great choice for a small space groundcover or border or as an accent in miniature gardens or container gardens. Excellent for rock gardens.
