It forms a broad mound, 3 feet tall and about 4 feet wide, with short branches densely clothed in short, rich blue-green needles, and orange buds at every stem tip during winter. The new growth in spring and again in summer is a vibrant light green. Extremely tough, the foliage is resistant to winter burn down to -50°F, and maintenance is minimal to none, as it maintains its dense form on its own. The more wind and\/or cold this one gets, the better it does! Constantly soggy or wet soils can lead to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil. Established plants have good drought tolerance. It grows best in full sun but may appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon in areas with hot summers. Once established, water needs are pretty low when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil are dry, provide water.
