That said, the new growth in spring emerges a beautifully contrasting bronze-red before turning to yellow. The older leaves on the interior are a mint green. We suggest all-day filtered sun or shade for this one as the foliage tends to burn in direct sun, especially in the hot deep South. A little direct sun in the mornings and late evening is okay. In dense shade, the leaves will be more of a glowing chartreuse color. As with most other Osmanthus, the fall season flowers of 'Ogon' exude a fresh fragrance that fills the garden with an aroma reminiscent of sweet apricots. When left to grow natural the shrub will have a broadly pyramidal form 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide over time. With occasional pruning it can be kept to half that size and also shaped as a rounded mound or globe. Easy to grow, Ogon is a must for those who like unique and colorful plants that are sure to be an eye-catching conversation piece.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide depending on how you want to shape and prune it, the Ogon Yellow Fragrant Tea Olive is ideal for use as a glowing specimen or grouping in partially to mostly shaded garden beds and landscape and woodland borders. Avoid locations that receive direct sunlight. A little direct sun in the mornings and late evening is okay. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on shady patios, decks, proches, balconies and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, shade gardens, yellow theme gardens, holly gardens and Asian gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 5 to 10 feet or more apart for space between plants depending on pruning

Growing Preferences

Ogon Yellow Fragrant tea Olive is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part to mostly shade. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the hot deep South. A little direct sun in the mornings and late evening is okay. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal; requiring little if any pruning except to remove a stray or damaged branch that is spoiling the desired shape of the shrub. That said, it reponds well to pruning and can be maintained as a lower round or mounded shrub. We've seen no disease or pest problems and deer and rabbits leave it alone.

Helpful Articles

Click on a link below to find helpful advice from our experts on how to plant and care for Osmanthus and False Holly shrubs.

How To Plant A Tea Olive

How To Fertilize A Tea Olive

How To Prune Prune A Tea Olive Shrub Or Tree

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/osmanthus-heterophyllus-ogon-golden-false-holly-tea-olive-11.jpg?v=1779986405
