It features colorful foliage that emerges purple in spring, gradually transitioning to a handsome deep green by summer. Fall brings an array of yellow, red, orange, and burgundy shades. The 2.5 to 3-inch long and 1.5 to 2-inch wide ovate leaves have coarse, rounded teeth and slightly undulating margins. It produces abundant small flowers in early spring, and although they don't have petals, the clusters of bright, crimson-red stamens are showy and interesting.
