It will surely not go unnoticed. When grown in consistently moist soil, it forms a lush mound of green foliage from which rise tall, thick purple stalks towering 9 feet high that are topped with several branched stems bearing large fireworks-like flower clusters up to 10 inches across bearing white to greenish-white pompom-like flowers. The bloom season, or fireworks show, begins in early summer and continues through early fall, which butterflies and many other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Since it prefers moist soil conditions and has such an impressive stature, it's a perfect plant for adding an imposing presence to sunny or partially shaded garden areas. It is especially nice as a stately sentinel around streams, creeks, ponds, and other bodies of water.

Angelica has a history of reputed medicinal and magical properties, and its leaves and stalks are edible. Native Americans used the stems and leaf stalks as a cooked vegetable similar to celery, However, before using or consuming any parts of any wild plant you are unfamiliar with, we suggest doing your own thorough research.

Wildlife Benefits

Purple Stem Angelica is a host plant for swallowtail butterflies and a nectar source for many other pollinators. Since it is a reseeding biennial, it is great for naturalizing woodland borders and meadows, providing the soil is consistently moist. It is a fine addition to woodland gardens, native gardens, rain gardens, bog gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for groupings; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Purple Stem Angelica is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist to wet soil of average or better fertility and full sun to part shade. It won't require as much water if plants receive filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. It is virtually maintenance-free, other than simply cutting the plant back to the ground in late winter before new spring growth emerges. That said, if the spent flowers are removed before expending energy to develop seeds, this helps to conserve energy the plant can use for the next growing season.

Helpful Tips

For helpful planting tips from our experts, click on the Planting & Care Advice tab on this page.

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0751/3263/3242/files/angelica-atropurpurea-purple-stem-masterwort-30.jpg?v=1779959208
