The color show begins in spring when the deepest red flowers of any dogwood put on a stunning floral display over a long period of weeks. As they begin to open the bracts (flowers) are an almost black to purple-red transitioning as they fully open to the deepest red of any red dogwood we've seen, darker than Cherokee Chief. Immediately following the bloom deep burgundy-red new leaves emerge that gradually transition to dark green painted with red. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the leaves gradually turn to brilliant burgundy-red with pops of orange and purple. As with other flowering dogwoods, abundant clusters of deep red berries are displayed in fall persisting well into winter providing cool season interest and a delectable delight for the birds.
