Though native to the coastal regions of North and South Carolina, it is best grown in pots to mimic the soil and moisture conditions in its native habitat - more on that below under Growing Preferences. It spreads to form a low mound to 5 inches tall and 8 inches wide, displaying its attractive red traps. Whenever a fly or other prey touches one of two trigger hairs on the leaf, the leaf rapidly closes to trap it. The plant does produce flowers atop tall stalks that rise above the foliage in late spring through early summer. However, some folks remove these so the plant can spend more energy producing foliage. If you're just getting started in growing Venus Flytraps and other carnivorous plants, Red Dragon Flytrap is one of the most reliable and easiest to grow.

NOTE: Some say that allowing a Venus Flytrap plant to flower robs it of energy. The flowering process will not kill the plant, but producing flowers does take energy, which could otherwise be used to create more foliage. In general, the lack of energy can stress a young or unhealthy plant, but a healthy, more established plant should be OK with allowing it to bloom.

Important Note: Venus Flytraps growing outdoors will capture and eat enough prey to feed themselves, so no fertilizer is necessary. That said, while they can be grown outdoors in full sun in many areas, in very hot and dry climates such as the Desert Southwest, they will do best with filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the heat and sunlight are most intense. In many areas, they can be grown outdoors in full sun. Venus Flytraps grown indoors should receive as much light as possible, such as in a sunny windowsill. Otherwise, grow lights can be positioned a foot away from the plant to provide supplemental light. They are generally unsuitable for growing in a terrarium because they need intense light and good airflow. Growing them outdoors is best, though they can be overwintered indoors in colder climates if necessary.

Water Needs

Venus Flytrap plants grow in moist, but not waterlogged, conditions in their native habitat, so they prefer a consistently moist soil. Setting the container in a shallow water tray ensures the soil stays damp or moist. Giving them distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water is best for optimum health. Essentially, it's best not to allow the soil to ever dry out completely, especially in the hot summer months. Never let them dry out, especially in the hot summer months. When the plants are dormant in the winter, you can allow the soil to dry out a bit between waterings. If you are growing them in a container in USDA Zones 6-9, it's best to grow them outdoors when temperatures range between 20 and 100°F, so they can go dormant during the winter. If nighttime temps drop below 20 but rise again during the day above 40, your plant will be fine outside. Otherwise, when temperatures are forecast to drop below 20°F, the container can be moved to an interior space such as a garage where the temperature will remain above freezing. Avoid keeping them in heated indoor spaces during winter, as this will disturb the needed dormancy cycle. Plants can be put back outside when temperatures rise above 20°F.

Soil and Container Needs

After receiving your plant, you can keep it in the nursery pot we grew it in for a year or so. After that, during the late fall or winter, while the plant is dormant, repot it in a container 8 inches in rim diameter or more with a drainage hole at the bottom. Avoid large pots, scaling up the pot size by 2 to 3 inches in diameter when repotting. You can pot multiple flytraps together in a single pot, as long as they are given enough space to grow.
