Even those who consider they have a \"brown thumb\" can easily grow this plant. The plant is comprised of one large rosette, called the \"hen,\" which sprouts many smaller rosettes around it called \"chicks.\" The 'Ruby Hearts' Hen and Chicks forms rosettes of pointed, silvery blue to blue-green leaves that are flushed rosy red at the base. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the red color at the base of the leaves intensifies and spreads up the leaf. In summer, leafy stalks rise from and above the hen bearing unique pinkish purple flowers.
