Slowly growing to maybe 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base, Shina makes for an eye-catching specimen in smaller garden spaces and containers. Very easy to grow, super cold tolerant to -50F, and drought tolerant when established, Shina is a perfect compliment to ornamental grasses and Japanese maples and other small trees. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established, mugo pines grow well in sandy soils and are tolerant of well-draining clay soils. It does not like wet feet so make sure you choose a planting site that has very well drained soil. Salt air tolerant so great for coastal gardens.
