It is one of the plants that survived the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in 1945, hence its name. One of the most beautiful of all bamboo, Shirioshima features green canes clothed in lush and glowing variegated leaves to 10 inches long with thick bands of white and green along the entire length of the leaf. With more sun the leaves might be more cream to soft-yellow with pink and purple tinting. That said, we think Shiroshima shows off the most in a darker, shadier environment with filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. Slow to spread, it reaches 16 feet tall or so and 3 to 4 feet wide in 10 years when growing in the ground. It also grows well in containers and does better than others growing indoors.

Landscape & Other Uses

Containers/Pots: Excellent

Crafts: -

Edible: -

Hedge: Excellent

Indoor: Good

Ornamental: Excellent

Privacy Screen: Excellent

Wood Quality: -

Growing Preferences

The Shiroshima Bamboo is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and sun or shade. That said, we think this species looks best in part shade to shade. Foliage will be more white with more shade and may turn more yellow with full sun. It spreads very slowly, more like a clumping bamboo.
