Adding a whopping 3 to 5 feet in height per year, it can reach 50 to 80 feet in height with a spread of 35 to 70 feet at maturity. It is ideal for use as a shade tree or privacy screen, or to reforest an open area. Handsome, deeply lobed leaves are a light green with silver undersides, hence the common name. In late winter to early spring small clusters of red to white flowers the beneficial pollinators will appreciate appear at the tips of almost every twig on the tree. The flowers are followed by green to white samaras (winged seeds), what some folks call \"helicopters,\" that spin like propellers as they fall from the tree to the ground. Birds and squirrels will enjoy consuming these seeds. The greyish brown bark becomes shaggy with age adding appeal during the winter. Easy to grow, the Silver Maple will thrive in most any moist to wet soil of average fertility and tolerates periodic dry soil when established.
