You'll get the same profusion of long-lasting, large, snow cone shape flower clusters that open creamy white and gradually fade to pink and strawberry-red, but on smaller plants that grow to only 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Flowering begins in mid-summer and continues well into fall. You'll see all colors on the plant simultaneously, which provides a stunning, colorful effect in your landscape.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright rounded form 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Strawberry Sundae makes an impressive specimen in smaller garden spaces. In larger spaces, it is spectacular in groupings or as a colorful low hedge. Also a nice addition to mixed flowering shrub borders, as an accent in home foundation plantings, as a background in perennial gardens, and in large pots, planters or other containers of 16 inches or more in diameter. It can take the heat at our location here in north-central Georgia, but is also exceptionally cold hardy, withstanding even the coldest winter temperatures as far north as USDA Zone 3a, where it will also tolerate full, all day sun. In zones 7 and 8 it will tolerate full sun however we've seen it perform and look its best with a little filtered sun or dappled shade during the hottest hours of summer afternoons. Too much shade and plants become floppy with diminished flowering. For best flowering, 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun is suggested.

Note: Strawberry Sundae is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on "new wood" (the current season's growth). This means you don't want to prune them in late spring or summer when they're preparing to bloom.

For proper pruning time and techniques on various types of Hydrangea see: How To Prune Various Types Of Hydrangea

Helpful Articles

Click on a link below to find helpful advice from our experts on how to plant and care for Hydrangeas.

How To Plant Hydrangeas In The Ground & Pots

How To Prune Various Types Of Hydrangea

How To Fertilize And Water Hydrangeas

Plant Long & Prosper!

Meet The Wilson Brothers & Staff

Questions? Contact Us

The Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea arrived on time and in perfect shape. As I consider your requests for individual reviews that you will use to let potential customers know if you are "legit"; I would like to offer the general review below for your consideration and use:
In this day and age of point and click and purchase, one learns quickly that anyone can post a picture of a plant and make a promise and post both and even pay to have their page placed in such a manner that when you search, they are right in front of you.
I would like to save you the hassle and trouble of learning that not all pictures tell a true story when it comes to what you get when you click on the picture and wait for the plants to arrive.
With Wilson Brothers Gardens you do not have to worry: what you see is what you will get. What you will get is a delivery with the plants packed in such a manner that shows they have spent time researching the most effective way to make sure that your plants arrive without being damaged in the shipping process.
When you open the box, no matter what size plant you purchase, the plant will be healthy and happy to see you!
The plants have a consistent quality and come with detailed instructions on planting and care and as if that is not enough; you can email with any questions and get a prompt and professional response usually that same day.
So, picture this: a company who tells the truth in what they post and takes pride in their plants and cares about each and every one of them in such a manner that as a customer you know that what you see is what you get because of what you do not see behind the scenes of their operation: a quality company committed to provide both quality product and customer service.
(Thank you so much for the manner in which you do what you do. I have been redoing my mothers landscaping and tell all the neighbors about where the plants came from and now they know when the see the delivery boxes by her garage door that something new is on the way into the landscaping!)---------------------------------------------Wow!
