We like it best as a staked upright weeping tree, which can grow up to 10 feet or more in height depending on the height of the stake. When staked with a shorter stake it forms a broad mound 4 to 6 feet high and 8 feet wide or so. When left to grow narurally it will spread 10 to 15 feet wide along the ground and\/or gracefully cascade over walls and down slopes and embankments. Whichever way it's grown, no two specimens will look the same as the tree is known to grow in irregular shapes with somewhat twisting branches and trunk, which add to its character and overall appeal. It's branches are clothed in whorls of 4 to 5 inch long dark green needles providing a soft textured look. As the tree ages, its bark separates to reveal reddish orange colored underbark, which contrasts nicely with the foliage. Easy to grow in well-drained soil of average to low fertility and likes as much sun as you can give it. It does not like wet feet so make sure you choose a planting site that has very well drained soil. Does not require pruning however its candles can be trimmed annually by up to 50% of their height to maintain a smaller, bushier plant.
