Its most distinct attribute is the shape of its willow-like leaves; averaging 5 inches long and very narrow compared to the leaves of other oaks, hence the common name. The leaves emerge a bright green in spring shifting to a deeper green during summer. Fall brings shades of yellow, bronze and orange. It yields round, 1\/2\" acorns that birds, deer and small animals will enjoy. The young bark is smooth and reddish-brown aging to gray-brown with shallow ridges and furrows. The strength of the willow oak can be seen by its majestic size and its rapid rate of growth up to 50 to 70 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide with a pyramidal shape when young maturing to an oval to rounded shape.
