Description

'Akita Yatsubusa' translates to "unusual autumn dwarf," and this diminutive yet robust true-dwarf Japanese Maple certainly lives up to its name. Its upright rounded form to maybe 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide at 10 years of age makes it a perfect fit as an un-pruned "natural bonsai" for small garden spaces, or pruned for bonsai in containers. The small tree is very densely clothed in small, charming, star-shaped five to seven-lobed leaves that emerge shades of pink and red in early spring quickly changing to yellow-green. By summer the foliage has transitioned to a darker rich green and then cooler fall temperatures bring vivid yellow, orange and red shades. Whether a bonsai or left to grow natural, this adorable but tough and heat tolerant little garden jewel is sure to be an attraction and conversation piece!

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its beauty, Akita Yatsubusa Japanese Maple is best used as a specimen in smaller landscape spaces and containers to draw attention. It is a perfect choice for bonsai. Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Note:  When selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing groundcovers or other plants that won't interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees and are very easy to grow in the ground or in pots, planters or other containers.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, you can find a complete listing of our sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties here, of which Akita Yatsubusa is one.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
