Description

Salix discolor, commonly called American Pussy Willow, is a native deciduous large shrub or small tree 10 to 15 feet tall and maybe half as wide. It is typically found in the wild growing in moist to wet soils in meadows, swamps and along lakes and streams. It is dioecious, meaning male and female catkins appear on separate plants. In winter, the male produces larger pearl-gray furry catkins while the female produces grey-green catkins, resembling the pads of a cat paw, hence the name. Just before the foliage emerges in spring the catkins open to reveal showy, fuzzy, bottlebrush-like flowers. The fact that the pussy willow blooms so early makes it a very valuable food source for beneficial pollinators and songbirds. Attractive, rounded lanceolate leaves up to 5 inches long are medium green above and glaucous on the undersides. An excellent native landscaping asset for those areas that stay consistently moist.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide, the American Pussy Willow can be grown naturally as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a small to mid-size tree that is ideal for use as a beautiful specimen or in groupings along borders. Since it loves moisture, it is a great choice for those areas in the landscape that tend to stay consistently moist, such as along streams, ponds or in low spots in the landscape where other shrubs or small trees may falter.  A fine addition to rain or wetland gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, bird gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

American Pussy Willow is exceptionally easy to grow. It is adaptable to most any moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It does not require pruning, however responds well to it for shaping purposes. Prune immediately after flowering.
