Description

A hardy and long-lived perennial plant adored for both its attractive and unique foliage and flowers, Alchemilla mollis 'Auslese', commonly known as Lady’s Mantle, forms a mound of pleated, soft, light green to mint green leaves of 6 to 8 inch diameter with 9 to 11 shallow lobes. In late spring or early summer the foliage mound becomes covered with clusters of tiny, star-shaped, chartreuse color flowers. Also very interesting and unusual is how after a rain the leaves retain moisture beads that sparkle like jewels!

The flowers of Lady's Mantle can be cut at the peak of bloom and hung up to dry in a dark room for future use in dried flower arrangements.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 15 to 18 inches tall and 18 inches wide or more, Auslese Lady's Mantle is ideal for use as an accent plant in small garden spaces or in groupings or as a border along paths or around patios and garden beds. Also an attractive small or large space groundcover. A fine addition to sunny or shady woodland gardens, but does appreciate afternoon shade in hot-summer climates. The plant will require a full season to establish a good root system but once it does it has good drought tolerance, making it a good choice for dry shade. A fine addition to cottage gardens and cut flower gardens. Flowers may be cut at the peak of bloom and hung up to dry in a dark room for future use in dried flower arrangements.

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass plantings

Growing Preferences

Auslese Lady's Mantle is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full shade to part shade. That said, in hot-summer climates it will appreciate shade or filtered sun in the afternoon. After establishing a root system during the first growing season, it will handle dry conditions so is a good choice for dry shade. Wherever it is grown, we think it looks best with some shade.
