Description

If you've always wanted a Redwood tree but haven't had the space to accommodate a broad and large tree, meet 'Barabits Requiem', a tall but narrow growing weeping Redwood selection reaching 30 feet or so in height but only 5 to 6 feet wide when all grown up. Quite eccentric, though most of its branches hang nearly straight downward, with age some grow more horizontally in an undulating pattern with twigs hanging straight down as well. This ensures that every Barabit's Requiem will make for a unique, one-of-a-kind specimen in the landscape. A lovely specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or groupings where space allows, Barabit's Requiem is sure to captivate attention and be a conversation piece. A Little History
This unique Redwood was discovered by M. Barabits of Sopron, Hungary and released in 1970. Someone overfertilized the orginal tree but luckily a few grafted plants were spared, which is why it was named 'Barabit's Requiem'. This cultivar is stronger than 'Pendulum' in all respects.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 30 feet tall and 6 feet wide or so, the Barabit's Requiem Weeping Giant Redwood is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where it's sure to be a conversation starter. It can also be planted in spaced groupings at 10 feet or more apart or two can be used to frame an entrance. A fine addition to conifer gardens, around garden ponds and other bodies of water, rock gardens, Asian and Zen gardens, native plant gardens and bird gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet apart for spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Barabit's Requiem Weeping Giant Redwood is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained, humusy soil and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Though it will tolerate dry spells when established, young trees will appreciate a consistently moist soil, especially during hot and dry weather. Maintenance is minimal to none...just plant and watch it grow. Pruning isn't necessary, however it responds well to it at almost any time of year for shaping purposes. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy.
