Description
Presented the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, the Beauty of Moscow is a superb Lilac bred in Russia in 1943 and adored for its prolific, large clusters of incredibly fragrant, fully double flowers that open from light pink buds for a two-tone effect. The flowers fill the garden with heavenly perfume and are perfect for cutting and displaying in a vase or floral arrangement. A vigorous grower with an upright, rounded habit, 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, clothed in glaucous, pointed-ovate to heart-shaped, dark gray-green to blue-green leaves. Easy to grow and super cold hardy to -40°F, Beauty of Moscow is an excellent specimen in sunny landscapes, woodland borders, or as an accent in home foundation plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide, the Beauty of Moscow Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. It is also a lovely accent in home foundation plantings and near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living spaces, where the beautiful flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It is a fine addition to fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, or white theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Beauty of Moscow Lilac can be grown in USDA Zones 3a-7b in hot summer climates and Zones 3a-8b in cool summer climates. It is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil, and preferably, in six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil, so apply pelletized lime if your soil is highly acidic. Fertilize once in early spring with a light application of organic plant food or slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer. Prune as desired after bloom in spring.
