Description

Everything about the Big Beauty Gardenia is big and beautiful! It forms a big bush, has a big quantity of flowers, and big fragrance. It produces a profusion of fragrant, double-petaled white flowers from late spring to early summer, and then continues to bloom through summer. The flowers contrast remarkably well with the lustrous, evergreen, dark green foliage on a dense, rounded mound that can reach up to 7 feet in height and width. Easy to grow, Big Beauty is fantastic as a specimen, in a grouping, or as an evergreen hedge, and is sure to fill the garden with a wonderful aroma that is truly delightful. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in indoor arrangements. You might be happy to know the deer turn their nose at it.

NOTE: We have heard that Big Beauty Gardenia will tolerate afternoon sun. That said, in our north-central Georgia gardens, we've always had better success with gardenias, providing them with some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours when the sunlight is most intense, which keeps their foliage a darker green. Whatever the location, we recommend at least four hours of sunlight daily, or all-day filtered sun.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 6 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide, the Big Beauty Gardenia is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a wonderfully fragrant hedge in sunny to partially landscape borders. Because they like a break from the midday afternoon sun and cold northwesterly winds, Gardenia are best planted on the east side of the home or other structures. Needless to say, these fragrant wonders are a fine addition to sensory gardens and near windows or outdoor living spaces where the fragrance can be enjoyed.

Suggested Spacing:  5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Gardenias are exceptionally easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils of average fertility and part sun, preferably morning sun with some shade or filtered sun in the mid-afternoon hours. The east side of the home or other areas that provide some afternoon shade are perfect. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other plant diseases.

Soil pH is important!

To flower their best and maintain deep green foliage color, all Gardenia require an acid to moderately acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. If your soil is alkaline, foliage will turn pale green to yellow, and flowering will be diminished.

Soil pH is a measurement of the soil's alkalinity or acidity, measured on a scale of 1-14, with 7 as the neutral point. Any measurement below 7 indicates acid soil conditions, and anything above 7 indicates alkaline. If you're unsure about the pH of your soil and whether or not it's suitable for growing Gardenia, it's a good idea to test the soil pH in the planting area.

You can quickly test soil pH with an inexpensive soil pH tester probeTo raise the pH (make it more alkaline), you can add pelletized limestone to the soil. To lower the pH (make it more acidic), you can apply Soil SulfurAluminum Sulfate, or Chelated Iron. Adding organic compost to the soil or using compost as mulch can also help to increase acidity and maintain acidic soil conditions.
